Full size Orchestras will often be called 'Philharmonic' or 'Symphonic', and consist of four sections - strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. Music wasn't commonly written for groups of players until the 15th Century, but the format didn't become popular with the masses until the 17th Century and the arrival of composers like Bach and Handel, who would hire the best available musicians to perform their works.
