'Classical' was a term first commonly used in 1930s America to distinguish 'serious' music from the popular music dominating the radio of the time. Many consider the period of 1750-1830 (i.e. post-Baroque and pre-Romantic), which saw the development of the classical symphony, to be the defining period, although many other eras are covered. Contemporary classical music is very much a thriving musical force.
