A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, Arensky went on to teach Rachmaninov and Scriabin at The Moscow Conservatory during the closing years of the 19th Century. Although it perhaps would be unfair to compare his somewhat slight compositions with those of his grander pupils, he never the less completed numerous attractive pieces of music. His piano trio in F minor is one such piece, full of fluttering turn of the century society passions. The Dussek Piano Trio pitch in perfectly, violinist Peter Tanfield and cellist Margaret Powell swelling their phrases with as much swoon-some emotion as possible without loosing their refined airs and graces while Michael Dussek warms his piano into the Romanza's light and friendly prettiness.
