Not much is known about the fifteenth century English composer Walter Frye apart from the fact that his music seems to have had a considerable influence on the continent. While the man might have been lost in the passing of time, at least some of his music remains. ''Missa Flos Regalis Sanctus'' is one surviving example. A fully formed and carefully constructed motet, it is sensitively performed by The Clerk''s Group. The singing is crisp and accurate and plenty of care has been taken to maintain a pure unruffled sound in keeping with Frye''s focused, almost meditational style. Just as Frye remains unknown apart from brief glimpses through his music, so his motet conjures up the beatific presence of heavenly, unknowable mysteries, in perfect keeping with the religion and church for whom he composed.

Biography

Frustratingly little is known of the biographies of the artists featured on this recording. What is known is that at one time or another in their careers they were all members of the London Guild of Parish Clerks. We compliment the two Brussels masses with six such English songs from a variety of manuscripts. Perhaps the most famous of these adapted songs is Fortune Alas, which appears elsewhere under the title Gentil Madonna, the first was a particular hit, inspiring more than one mass setting. We have presented these songs in two different ways, either with each voice texted or with vocalised lower parts since the source rarely give indications of how the lower voices should be treated.
