Biography
Susan Sheppard baroque cello Susan Sheppard is one of the pioneering instrumentalists who lias played a critical role in the early music revival over the past twenty-five years. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Derck Simpson and subsequently with Andre Navarra. On embarking on a professional cello career, she became closely involved with the, at that time, small group of musicians who were exploring the effect of study of contemporary performance practice on modern interpretation of baroque and classical music. Formally principal cello of The Academy of Ancient Music and the London Classical Players, in the 1980s she became a founder member of The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment where she is a principal cellist. With this orchestra she has performed all over the world specialising in continue playing and working with conductors as diverse as Simon Rattle and Gustav Leonhardt notably in baroque opera productions at Glyndcbourne Festival Opera. She has also played in several chamber music groups among them L''Ecolc d''Orphcc and The Classical Piano Trio, and in recent years has performed the Bach Unaccompanied Suites many times in public. Susan Shcppard is professor of baroque cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has published editions of baroquc cello sonatas. Among the recordings she has made arc the first complete recordings of both Handel''s chamber music and the Vivaldi cello sonatas. She lives in London with her son.
