It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful sounds on the planet: a collected mass of unadorned human voices, all perfectly balanced and perfectly tuned. Psychologists, one suspects would be able to spin many a theory around the deep seated social and personal instincts such a sound invokes. Whatever. What can be said without a doubt is that when the Salisbury Cathedral Choir, who have just successfully toured the United States is able to give such an immaculate performance of one of Wesley'' ecclesiastical masterpieces, any listeners can''t but helped serenity and awe, calm and wonder. Organist David Halls helps out, sneaking in some mighty bass notes that creep up through the floorboards to provide a piece of music that could have even hardened atheists appreciating religious sentiment.
