Prefuse 73 is one-man production powerhouse Guillermo Scott Herren.
He describes the album as "the radio station of my mind" and explicitly points out that "the master plan is to not use anyone who I collaborated with as a commodity to sell a record" but rather to "put different people together on a track who usually wouldn't be." The resulting material makes an amazingly diverse, interesting, totally unique and yet completely accessible body of work, all securely underpinned and melded together with Prefuse 73?s forward thinking musical style. Previous Prefuse 73 output includes: debut album Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives; 2003?s One Word Extinguisher album; and the Extinguished: Outtakes EP. 2005 now sees the prolific producer move further onwards into uncharted sonic territories without stopping to pause for breath. Prefuse 73 met all the artists and collaborators featured on Surrounded By Silence whilst touring and recording during the past two years. The cast list, roughly in order of appearance, is as follows: Wu Tang Clan member and firmly established solo artist Ghostface [aka Ghostface Killa, aka Tony Starks, aka Pretty Toney] - an emcee held in high esteem by rap fans the world over. Initially one third of the boundary smashing Company Flow trio, El-P Who?s since created his own Def Jux label and built a successful career as a solo rapper and producer. Tyondai Braxton whose music involves building orchestrated loops with voice, guitar and found objects then manipulating them through guitar pedals? The "spookily angelic voices" [New York Times] of twin sisters Claudia and Alejandra Deheza of the ?On!Air!Library!? trio who?ve recently toured the US with Interpol and The Secret Machines. Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong, also known as The Books. Camu who provides sublime and soulful vocals on the sparkling ?Now You?re Leaving? track? James Rutledge, who?s better know as Pedro and actually first met Prefuse when interviewing him for a magazine feature. Kazu; originally from Kyoto but now based in New York and one third of ?Blonde Redhead?. New York rapper and Def Jux artist Aesop Rock. The rapper Masta Killa whose solo debut ?No Said Date? surely rates as one of the best of the Wu Tang Clan?s solo achievements. GZA, the [legendary] rapper also know as ?The Genius? and one of the three original founding Wu Tang members mix show and LA underground spinner DJ Nobody? Solo rapper and producer Beans previously of hip-hop trio Anti Pop Consortium. One of Prefuse 73?s own musical alter-egos Piano Overlord. Broadcast, who "create songs with the texture of scudding clouds and calm seas" according to The Guardian and Grammy Award winning Mexican alt-rockers Caf? Tacuba.
