Biography
Paul Tingen is a guitarist who draws his inspiration from a variety of sources: folk, rock, ambient, jazz, classical music, flamenco. Christened ''Zen'' guitarist by the London listings magazine Time Out, he has written a body of original solo acoustic guitar pieces (performed without vocals) that have been acclaimed by Scotland''s premier jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, singer David Sylvian, ex-Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, solo artist and renowned music producer Michael Brook, and many others. If this list of names sounds unusually eclectic, it is appropriately so: the one thing that everyone agrees on who hears the Dutch-born guitarist play, is that he sounds unlike anybody else.
''Highly enjoyable. One of those rare guitar albums that is about the music and not about guitar technique. As such it will speak to everyone, and not just to guitarists. May The Road Rise To Meet You is very musical and has a strong and relaxing atmosphere that fills up the whole space.''
- Phil Manzanera, guitarist, producer and founding member of Roxy Music.
''I feel inspired by the way Paul Tingen has used the guitar to get across - communicate - his music. It''s so refreshing to hear a guitarist who sees music as the most important part, not using his obvious mastery of the instrument to impress, but to tell a story.''
- Martin Taylor, jazz guitarist.
''Heartfelt and passionate. Tingen''s innermost intentions are in the music, and that''s why it communicates. After listening to the album, my sense of well-being is considerably improved.''
- Rupert Hine, artist and producer of Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Les Negresses Vertes, Howard Jones and Duncan Sheikh.
''May The Road Rise To Meet You uplifts with its qualities of stillness, acceptance, peace and celebration.''
- David Sylvian and Ingrid Chavez, artists.
''This music moves in an interesting area. There''s a real performance, yet there are at the same time elements of ambient music. The album will appeal to many people.''
- Michael Brook, artist, guitarist and producer, who has worked with Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N''Dour, Khaled and The Pogues.
''Tingen''s Gibson acoustic demands to be heard. Shades of flamenco, jazz, blues and classical styles lend colour to an almost avant-garde approach to the guitar: loud, lightning-fast passages contrasting with delicate melodies, the whole performance in a constant state of motion.''
- Malcolm MacWatt, review of a live performance in the Northern Scot.
