Ottfried Mietzke is one of the new generations of composers seduced by the possibilities offered by electronics - not just the grand new vistas of sound introduced by electro-acoustic music but also the home recording and realisation possibilities offered by the modern day synthesizer. 'Summer' clearly owes something to the world of electronic pop and dance music. Although the sounds and rhythms he uses will be familiar to anyone interested in those forms of music, Mietzke gradually leads the listener into more interesting arenas, morphing his piece into intriguing harmonic adventures and challenging his listeners expectations by deliberately unleashing a range of digital glitches, from tiny little chiming jumps to large, harsh crackling rhythms.
