it?s been a whirlwind few months for One Self, first they dropped their debut single ?Be Your Own? to critical acclaim, then came Bluebird ? the sweetest of summer records, then came the album to a barrage of slick reviews from the press, and in-between all this, the trio have been touring relentlessly across the globe. But hey, Vadim and crew were never going to sit on their laurels, were they? Yarah Bravo, Blu Rum 13 and DJ Vadim make up the supergroup that is One Self, and soon they?ll be back from their travels for a 15 date tour of the UK. As if that?s not enough, they?ve got a single to promote, and it?s hotter than the English weather ? a lot hotter! One Self is a group comprised of DJ Vadim and MCs Blu Rum 13 (based in the U.S) and up-and-coming female MC Yarah Bravo. Together, they make a kind of sparse, utterly contemporary soul music. Vadim?s solo sound is fresh, innovative and very experimental, however this group is a big step away from this. His involvement with the One Self group has resulted in a far more focused and directed album than his previous solo offerings, while managing to keep his raw distinctive style. There are songs on this album which could be heard on the radio ? as well as in a club, or in your bed. Yarah Bravo manages to rap in a truly original and soulful voice and her butter-like tones will see chart success later in the campaign. Equally, Blu Rum's smooth voice and hooky lyrics add a special touch to the tracks. The group write and produce the music themselves, working very much as a unit, while crucially also bringing their own individual perspectives to the whole output. Then there are the mixes. First Vadim throws in a roots-drenched remix that takes re-recorded vocals and dubbed out drums to twist the original into a more tribal roll out. Next up the mighty Amp Fiddler comes through with two funk shufflers, making it very hard to choose a favourite. Whether you go for the smoothed out piano chill or the more P-Funkish synth squelch, you have to admire the sheer musicality and effortless style.
