Biography
It''s easy to define a great band in terms of its record sales. The only problem is that the majority of signed bands today release albums that generally consist of only two or three great songs. The rest are just plain filler; polystyrene foam jingles that lack substance or soul, that titillate for a time before eventually turning into mush and paste. But every so often, thrown up by that incessant pop tide, we discover bands who actually care about their creative output; bands who attempt to establish relationships with their audience through something more than their music, who communicate with intelligence and who passionately believe that every song should at least be an attempt at brilliance. MINITHIN are one of those rare bands who feel that every song should be crafted impeccably, not just attempting to twist the pop form, but also make a difference to that ever growing ocean that is the pop world. Since the beginning of 2001 MINITHIN have been working on a set of songs that attempt to smash the template.
Going back a few months, when things were a bit different, to the time when Big Brother''s beady eyes first graced our living rooms the band had been living in a state of non-existence, in stasis, in name only; a band waiting for one of those defining moments to rear its head. For MINITHIN this moment was inspired by the arrival of Sarah Heeley who having tired of London and life in the ''entertainment'' world, joined the band as the singer. With the introduction of Sarah on vocals the band were to eventually move into the new century with only one thing in mind, to prove that greatness is not manufactured but rather innate. During the early part of 2001 the band set about putting together a collection of songs to charm the pants off the music industry and prove that there is an alternative to established pop formulas.
Tales of misery, loss and the stupidity of the human condition are themes that have set up home safely cocooned within the MINITHIN sound, a sound that has the depth of a John Barry opus and the classicism of a Bacarach and David tune. Their progress, already well starred, will be fascinating to observe and great fun to indulge. And as Karen Carpenter once put it in her delightfully doe-eyed way, ''it''s only just begun...''
