Biography
By the time of Handel''s death in 1759, the Keyboard concerto, one of his most important innovations, was firmly established in Britain''s musical life.
With the arrival in London in 1762 of Bach (1735-82), the fashionable new gallant style, of which he was a prime exponent, became a serious challenge to the traditional though still influential Handelian manner.
Both styles are found in the six concertos of John Stanley (1712-86), published as op.10 in 1775. All have accompanimental parts for just two violins and a cello, and four of them also adopt the modern two-movement format.
