Biography
Kosheen's debut album 'Resist' went a long way in establishing the Bristol born band as a live phenomenon and world class act. Kosheen spread their music across the globe with an impressive number of shows in no less than 33 countries far and wide from Europe, Australia, South Africa, Asia and the States to audiences totaling ? million. The word spread and over a million of those bought the album and in the UK 'Resist' peaked at Number 8 and spawned three top 15 hits (including a Number 6 with 'Hide U'). Last year Kosheen received a Brit nomination for 'Best Dance Act' and also won a number of awards at the Dancestar Awards in both the UK and USA.Before meeting Markee Substance and Darren Decoder, Sian Evans spent a period of her life in a tepee-based community on a Welsh mountain retreat. Here Sian choose to raise her son for a while and pursue her song writing. Meanwhile, Markee Substance relocated from Glasgow and on meeting Darren Decoder the two created seminal club nights in Bristol. Once returning to Bristol, Sian became a regular patron to their club, often grabbing the mic to add her emotive folky vocals, immediately capturing the attention of Darren and Markee. Armed with a number of quality songs they head to the studio to lay the soundtrack to their creations. Thus marked the birth of Kosheen. As the Japanese interpretation suggests a fusion of new ('Ko') and old ('Sheen') brings together Sian Evans emotive vocals and traditional song writing techniques to Darren Decoder's and Markee Substance's dark electronica and guitar-driven riffs. The band's forthcoming album, 'Kokopelli', has certainly been a labour of love and draws together Kosheen's diverse musical roots and their personal experiences from performing live across the world. The name 'Kokopelli' is taken from the North American Indian symbol of fertility, individuality and music. Legend has it that the mythical hunchbacked character spread joy through villages with his flute. The first cut to be lifted from, Kokopelli', is 'All in My Head'. The song immediately hits you with its guitar driven hook, Sian's powerful vocals and expansive production. It depicts the intense feelings that are still present with a loved one despite being physically apart.
