Biography
The Yiddish Fantasy is a new CD of Jewish jazz from Bristol composer Jon Stein. The piece was commissioned for the 1999 Teignmouth Jazz Festival and has been performed by Musaic at venues and festivals around the southwest. The music is a subtle blend of Jewish folksongs and modern jazz.
The Composer
Jon Stein, 33, has been composing and performing since his late teens. He started playing jazz piano with the Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra and went on to study piano and composition at the Guildhall School of Music. Since moving to Bristol in 1991 he has led a number of groups, including the successful Klezmernauts who brought traditional Jewish folk music to audiences around the country and played at London''s Purcell Room in 1995. In 1997 he received a Research and Development grant from South West Arts to pursue his work in Jewish music. Since then he has composed for Bristol's big-band, Ultrasound and made numerous radio appearances. Jon is also an experienced piano teacher, workshop leader and community musician.
The Band
Musaic was formed in the summer of 1999 specially to perform the Yiddish Fantasy. The band features the best jazz talent in the south west including Andy Hague on trumpet, Jake McMurchie on sax, Adam Gittins on bass and Simon Gore on drums. Each of these players has a distinguished career in jazz/pop music leading their own groups as well as performing with Portishead and Andy Sheppard.
