Ask anyone in the States and they?ll be able to tell you about a new singer/songwriter sensation who is currently making big waves across America. Those in her homeland, the UK, may not be so sure, but that?s all set to change for Jem.The plaudits for Jem could hardly be higher in the States. She?s the biggest British female debut artist of 2004 in the States, she?s written a track for Madonna with Guy Sigsworth (Bjork, Frou Frou), is getting widespread critical acclaim for her debut album ?Finally Woken? of which she?s sold over 100,000 copies (70,000 of those without a video in the marketplace), she?s being heavily backed by DJ Nic Harcourt from LA?s groundbreaking KRCW radio station (credited with breaking Coldplay in the States), has signed to the ATO label (alongside David Gray, Ben Kweller), has performed in front of thousands of raving fans on tours across America, one of her songs has been selected to promote the new series of ?The O.C.? and been used on ?Six Feet Under?, and she has been tipped as one of the most exciting artists coming out of the UK by everyone from Elle Magazine to Entertainment Weekly to the New York Times. And when Franz Ferdinand and Dizzee Rascal were picking up congratulations in the UK for representing the Brits in the US equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize, the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize, Jem also picked up a nomination and has as much chance of bringing the Award back home.
