Biography
It's been a challenging task for the former Reindeer Section and Snow Patrol guitarist, but the result is an album of striking emotional intensity and lyrical inventiveness, at the same time uplifting and disquieting, artfully crafted and breathtakingly intimate. Drawing on a giddy mix of influences that range from Neil Young to Jim O'Rourke via Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine, Flood the Tanks bears the scars of its long and difficult gestation - which suits Iain just fine. The songs deal with the universal issues of loss, struggle and discovery. Summer Jets scrapes goodbye across a clear blue sky. A Few Conclusions concerns a pivotal moment. Boy Boy Boy is a perfect plea to the far through and the strung out. In addition to the Amazing Pilots, Flood The Tanks also features Rough Trade artist Jacob Golden, who contributes vocals and programming, Iain's brother Paul, Miriam Kaufmann on viola and vocals, and Snow Patrol, who help out on the album's closer, That One You Always Do. Ultimately Iain's music contains an uplifting message based on a profound belief in the resilience of the human spirit. 'There's definitely a current of hope running through this record, just under the surface, in and out of reach. Its making hinged around the tension of being mid-leap. And it seems being mid-leap is the place I'm happiest'.
