The Haydn Society of Great Britain has been busily promoting the music of Joseph Haydn and his contemporaries since it was created in 1978. While there is something undeniably quaint about such a single-minded musical organisation, the passion its members'' display for their chosen subjects has to be admired. It also can be clearly heard on this recording of a Schubert mass, where the society''s combined enthusiasm is put to expert use. Every phrase and harmony is treasured, the clean melodies polished, the pronunciation crisp giving the listener as much of Schubert and as little of the performers as possible: a refreshing true labour of musical love.
