Biography
'It's as if pop music has been created from scratch all over again, this time perfectly.' Julie Burchill, The GuardianIn just 18 months, Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts have changed UK pop forever. And now Girls Aloud are back for more! They've already notched up a whoppin' million single sales while their debut album, Sound Of The Underground went platinum and was as big a success with the critics as the public. Now the band are ready to take it to the next level with their hotly-anticipated second release. They've been holed up in the studio for the first part of '04 working with Xenomania, the surefire songwriting and production team behind 'Sound Of The Underground' and 'No Good Advice'. The result: sensational new material, the first taste of which is the explosive single, 'The Show'. With its feisty lyrics and infectious electro-pop backdrop, this track is classic Girls Aloud. Throw in an equally sassy video, lead vocals from each girl and you've got all the ingredients for yet another huge hit for the band. So let's recap on those hits so far: after storming to Christmas Number One in 2002, the band's first single, 'Sound Of The Underground' was the best-selling single in the UK for a month and was still in the Top 20 three months later. It not only rocked the charts, but shot them into the record books and has also been doing the business across the world. The second single 'No Good Advice' was their second non-love song in a row, it's brassy, breathless and defiant - sounding like nothing else in the charts while sounding exactly like Girls Aloud. These were followed by two further top three singles, the downtempo groove 'Life Got Cold' and then 'Jump', an irresistible cover of the Pointer Sisters' 1984 hit for the movie Love Actually. Meanwhile, debut album Sound Of The Underground peaked at number two in the charts when it was released in May 2003. It's been acclaimed by the critics as an 'iconic pop album. The stand-out tracks are many but include an electro-rock anthem, 'Boogie Down Love', the dance-flavoured 'Mars Attack' and the luscious 'Forever And A Night'. Recording aside, performing is still very much their favourite Girls Aloud activity: 'It's my favourite thing about being in the band,' Nadine grins. 'I almost don't feel myself when I'm onstage. That's the best part of all this. It feels like we've had the stabilisers taken off - and it's great.' And now you better get ready because Girls Aloud are back and ready to rock your world.
