Biography

The idea behind dreamstate, and their 1st album, “my little ice age”, surfaced some time ago, with 3 friends, Shrub, Cudo and Paul forming a collective, and musing over future plans and ambitions relating to musical projects. Each of the 3 were enthusiastic about creating some new, original songs and instrumentals in whatever musical framework worked best at the time. Now move on to Spring of 2000, when the dreamstate album was realised. A collection of tracks had emerged, written by Shrub, which varied as much in musical mood and dynamics as did the lyrical subjects of the 9 songs featured (words unveiling themes of haunted individuals, cynical observers, plus narratives on astronomy, sweet isolation, leaving/returning home and striving for an elusive goal). “My little ice age” is quite a personal collection in part, intense in places, and with a bittersweet melodic vein surfacing at times. However, it’s also embellished with lighter touches of ambience to give the album some sense of balance.

To flesh out with more detail about the group, they all hail from the Northern English town of Wigan, from where bands such as Starsailor and Witness have connections. All 3 members of dreamstate have performed and recorded in other groups and musical projects; Shrub was in a band with the journalist and radio/TV broadcastor Stuart Maconie, whilst Cudo and Paul have paid their dues around the gig circuit. They’re content at present to remain in the studio, with the continual goal of creating new material. Meantime Shrub, in collaboration with his friend Haze has written a song which is presently being developed by Claudia Brucken (ex Propaganda) with the aid of her husband, Paul Humphries (founder member of OMD); Shrub''s quite honoured by this progression, as he was a fan of their own work prior to this connection. Tracks for a second album, plus a sideline instrumental album are being worked on right now. Hold on!
