Biography
Born and raised in Bedford, he has been involved in music from a very early age, his main influences were Bob Marley & the Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Decker, Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, King Tubby (the Dub Inventor), Lee Perry and many others.
At the age of 16/17 he linked up with his brother Fred and joined a reggae band called Tarishi, at this time he was also regularly listening to the legendary Jah Shaka sound system all over London and the UK, this was a major influence which is still present and can be appreciated in the immense talent shown by Dread Connexion. The band went from strength to strength having two releases behind them ''Jah Children'' and ''Outsider'' eventually supporting acts such as Aswad, Louise Bennett, linton Kwesi Johnson and a host of other artists and gigs around the country to mention a few. Inevitably due to lack of commitment for one reason or another work, family etc the band split up (around 1985/86), at this time his brother Fred already had a four track mixer and recorder and was laying down bassline tracks with a simple Boss drum machine and Dread played percussion and bongoes on top, with a borrowed Yamaha DX7 to compliment the hard core dub he and Fred managed to get four master plates (dub plates) mastered at Neumans in London, these Plates were taken personally to Shaka by Dread, Shaka played the dub plates for around a month without Dread being present, after a quick phone call Shaka told him to come to his next sound system session down in Cheggars Hall London, the day of reckoning was here, one of the Dub plates was a success, Shaka always played his best or most exclusive song last-and yes ''Warrior Dub'' now known as ''Warrior Stance'' was played at the very end and took the roof off the building, the crowd was ecstatic with frenzy it was a major breakthrough for the brothers. Shaka that night requested that the dub plate should be released and so it was in 1988 the brothers now became known as Dread & Fred on the Jah Shaka label and it sold like wildfire in 1988. The 12'' release had so much success that Shaka decided to release an album, another breakthrough for the duo ''IRONWORKS'' (named appropriately after their now eight track studio in Bedford), another success. Dread & Fred went on to produce another two albums with Shaka ''On High'' and ''African Chant'' they also went on to release an album called ''Powerhouse'' on the Dub Venture label with Blacka Mix in 1996 and released their own 12'' 45 entitled ''Down Too'' Long'' voiced by Isses Dread (DCX) on their own Dread & Fred label. .
The two managed to put together a double act band which involved Fred on the bass guitar and Dread controlling the drum machine, synths, sequencer, octopad etc they were probably the first successful dub digital duo to perform live on stage anywhere world wide and while backing well known artists such Eari Sixteen, Bobby Melody, Aisha, Rasheda, Dub Judah and local artists such as Ras lyah, Kwasi Asante, Country Culture and many many more, they toured all over the country from Penzance to Aberdeen and went onto Europe. .
Sadly in Sept 98 Dread & Fred parted and went their own ways for one reason or another but Dread Connexion has continued to create and keep the standards of dub music alive ,now ready to hit Ihe dub scene and roots reggae vibes again he has released his own cd '' Dub Origins''..
