You're A Woman, I'm A Machine
The debut album, ?You?re A Woman, I?m A Machine?, released February 28th on 679 Recordings, was produced by Al-P at Chemical Sound studios in Toronto. It starts at what feels like 500 miles an hour, managing to wrench an unholy noise from the bass guitar on ?Turn it Out? and ends with 3 minutes of sleazy funk on ?Sexy Results?.

Biography

Of course there have been two piece bands before, the two piece is engrained indelibly in the lexicon of rock, Simon And Garfunkel, The Chemical Brothers, The Carpenters, Sonny And Cher, the list goes one. It is fair to say though that none before have managed to make as much noise with as little instrumentation as Death From Above 1979. Death From Above 1979 are a two-piece, two friends; Jesse F Keeler and Sebastien Grainger. To hear them on record, it is hard to believe that the only instruments being played (with the exception of the odd Flute sample or Moog oscillation) are the Bass And Drums. It?s a bit like how Queen used to write ?No one played synthesisers? in the sleeve notes of their early albums, well with Death From Above 1979 no one plays guitars ?we don?t need them, and besides why would we want to put anyone else on the payroll??

The two have wasted little time in establishing themselves as one of the most thrilling and innovative live bands around. On the band?s first UK tour it was not uncommon for them to play three shows a night. They even played a show in a fan?s living room, their limited equipment making them particularly portable. They band have toured with acts as diverse as The Futureheads, The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Anthrax and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as becoming the unofficial house band at London?s Crobar where Kerrang! remarked ?they sound like no one else around at the moment, brutal enough to make your arse explode, fast enough to make your skull vibrate?it feels great, trust us? Kerrang! Death From Above 1979 will embark on their first headline tour of the UK in January, their fourth tour of the UK since July.

Their sound is commonly described as brutal, uncompromising and pulverising. Whilst these are apt definitions, they?re unmistakeably danceable and fun and on ?You?re A Woman, I?m A Machine? they may have made an exceptionally well-disguised pop album. Whatever it is, and whether you like it or not, it?s certainly impossible to ignore?
