Biography
During the late 1960''s and during the course of taking some classical piano lessons, I hitched a lift with a petrol tanker to Teeside armed with ?5 to buy an acoustic six string guitar which was in effect my birthday present. It was all right, you could play it without too much of a struggle.
On this, I learned some rudimentary chords. Leaving school with ''o'' level art, I went to work on a market - garden which was hard work. It extended to 26 acres and was cold, particularly during the winter months where outside work was mandatory. This job enabled me to buy an electric guitar before I went to hospital for a hernia operation (seriously).
The first band I helped to form was called ''The Sharks''. We played chart stuff and later, blues stuff, early Stones, John Mayall, Lightning Hopkins and Yardbirds. The singer had false teeth, which lead to certain difficulties with certain words. Enthusiasm pulled us through.
The next band was a soul, seven-piece outfit (Commitments type). They were very good and in addition to getting plenty of work, often had double booking during the course of the same night. The manager of a Harrogate band, came to see me play and asked me to join them. A struggling progressive blues outfit, (Spooky Tooth, Cream, and John Mayall). We sounded more like S.Tooth than they did!
We did an audition for a TV company in Birmingham and were chosen out of a total of eighty bands to appear in TV. The song was awful, it was a sad lament by a band called ''Marmalade.'' No, it was depressing and so at this point I left to work at Kew Gardens.
Every night, I would hang round the studios and record companies. Eventually, Polydor gave me free recording time every month under the guidance of one of their A/R men, Andy Black.
After this, I went back to play with some more bands in and around Harrogate. One notable band was called ''Emmanuel'' which I helped to form with a keyboard player called Graham Spence and a well-known drummer called Dilly.
During the Punk era, we recorded on song, which went onto a compilation album. The album went to No I in the alt. M.M. charts.
This established me as a specialist punk Recordist. At first I had mixed feelings about the music. In any event, I saw my job from the point of view of engineer, to record the music as clearly as I could. My first album which I put out was called ''Carrion'' and included the specialist skills of visiting band members.
The second album which is on my site is called ''Lovers Rooks and Queens'', Lead vocals include, Stephanie Nazier, Colin, Rudi and Kevin. This was recorded over a four-year period and most of it on the Studer A80. My ideas were matured and completed by the very kind assistance of the 17 musicians who took part. The second album ''This way, that way'', took forty weeks, working on it every day. Most of it I did Not so much from a male ego thing, more, because I simply wanted to explore what I could do by working and re-working an idea which, by virtue of refinement, eventually becomes better. The first song, an instrumental called ''Whale Song'', is my favorite. I invested much more than money into this album....
''Elisha Only Mimes'' was recorded over six months. The title is an anagram. Early in my life as someone who works for a living I was subjected to bodily strains for which two of my vertebrate discs have been damaged. The net result of this is that I suffer from the pain on a constant basis, which requires the use of painkillers to keep the pain at bay. I am a registered disabled without the outward appearance of a bandage to say so. I state this here purely for the purpose of saying, that we all, including disabled people, have something to say.................
