Bobby Chen's album is a 'tour-de-force'; a scintillating and committed recording that deserves high praise. He has a wonderful balance between his two hands. In Schubert's Impromptu in G flat major, the left-hand shimmers in exuberant expectation as the right hand transcends with the gentlest and sweetest of melodies. Liszt's oeuvre 'St Francois de Paule Marchant sur les flots' is a piece of enormous character and dynamism, a virtuoso's pact, and you can sense the physical involvement that such a performance necessitates. The formidable technical demands of the scale and arpeggio passages are so full of character and life, but the ending is rather spellbinding.

In 1996 he was selected as a soloist in a CD issue on the Classic FM label entitled ''Yehudi Menuhin''s Young Virtuosi'' and toured Britain with Lord Menuhin and the Warsaw Sinfonia performing Beethoven''s Triple Concerto.

Recitals and concerto performances include St John''s, Smith Square, the Royal Festival Hall playing the 4th Sonata of Prokofiev as part of the Prokofiev Festival, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, St Martin-In-The-Fields and Bridgewater Hall as part of the John Lewis golden jubilee celebration tour.

Bobby is sponsored by John Lewis and is currently at the Royal Academy of Music where he continues his studies under Ruth Nye.

`Chen''s touch was masterful, combining the solid, enviable technique of the Russian school with the assured elegance of his Claudio Arrau lineage...(the performance) demonstrated the amazing maturity he is capable of wielding.''
This CD is a collection of pianoforte masterpieces ranging from the delight of the Haydn sonata with its exuberance, beauty and wit to the sublime impromptu of Schubert, written at the beginning of the outpouring of great compositions in the last fifteen months of his life - to the story telling brilliance of Liszt and Stravinsky.

The CD is the very first offering from a brand new independent label, Jaques Samuel Recordings. If this is anything to go by the new releases should be ones to watch. Join the peopelsound.com Music Alert for further info and the chance to win tickets to his concert at the Purcell Room in March!
